Manor Care Inc. said "significant improvement" in both its health care and its lodging divisions increased the Silver Spring-based company's earnings 35 percent in the latest quarter.
Meanwhile, Math Box Inc., a Rockville-based computer retail chain, said its earnings tripled in the year ended Jan. 31.
Manor Care, which owns and operates nursing homes, hospitals and Quality Inn motels across the country, said its earnings rose to $6.6 million (25 cents per share) during the quarter that ended Feb. 28, from $4.9 million (19 cents) a year earlier. The per-share figures are adjusted for a three-for-two stock split that took effect Dec. 6. Revenue in the quarter increased 26 percent to $108.5 million from $86.1 million.
For the nine months ended Feb. 28, Manor Care earned $22.1 million (83 cents), a 33 percent gain over the $16.7 million (63 cents) earned by the company a year earlier. Sales for the nine-month period rose 26 percent, to $334.4 million from $264.7 million.
Math Box's 17 MBI Business Centers, all on the East Coast, brought in $2 million in profits (75 cents) during the year ended Jan. 28, compared with $659,000 (32 cents) the previous year. Sales for the year more than tripled, to $50.7 million from $16.4 million.
The company's earnings and sales went up by a similar magnitude during the fourth quarter; earnings rose to $722,000 (24 cents) from a year-earlier $265,000 (13 cents) in the quarter, while sales increased to $17.8 million from $6.4 million a year earlier.
