Eisinger Kilbane & Associates, a Bethesda developer, announced that United Artist Communications Inc. has leased facilities to operate two multiscreen movie houses that will bring 21 new theaters and 130 more jobs to Montgomery County.
United Artist, the largest operator of motion picture theaters in the United States, has leased 77,000 square feet of space from Kilbane for the projects. The movie houses will be at two locations in Rockville and Bethesda.
The Rockville complex will occupy 42,000 square feet at the Rockville Metro Center. It will be built during the second phase of the Metro Center's three-phase construction schedule. The 10-screen complex will have a seating capacity of 3,000 and will be the area's first three-level theater. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The contractor has not been selected.
The Bethesda project will be housed in a 160,000-square-foot building being developed by Kilbane and the Broadhurst family at the intersection of Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The movie house will be an 11-screen, 35,000-square-foot complex with a seating capacity of 2,900. The $30 million building also will offer 10,000 square feet of retail space on the street level and 118,000 square feet of office space above the cinema. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Oldham & Seltz is the architectural firm for both projects.
