ERC International Inc. reported a 90 percent increase in first-quarter profits to $611,000 (15 cents a share) from $321,000 (8 cents) in the same period of last year.

The professional services company, which is based in Vienna, reported first-quarter revenue of $20.8 million, up from $11.8 million last year.

The company attributed the increased revenue to a new defense program, expanded involvement in government facilities management and operation, and the success of its nuclear power plant quality control business.

*USLICO Corp. reported first-quarter earnings of $5.9 million (50 cents a share), up 9 percent from $5.4 million (57 cents) the year before, when fewer shares were outstanding. Revenue s increased to $129.9 million from $77.7 million.

USLICO, which is based in the District, said the first-quarter results reflected a 63.5 percent increase in new life volume and a 33 percent increase in new life premiums.

*Washington Gas Light Co. reported net income for the first quarter of $31.7 million ($1.92 a share), 3 percent lower than the $32.6 million ($2.01) for the same period last year. Revenue was $126.586 million, down from $126.617 million.

The company said earnings were lower because of moderately higher operating expenses.
