Ground was broken last week for a four-story medical center, the first stage of the 107-acre International Renaissance Center at the intersection of Rtes. 301 and 50 in Bowie. The $12.5 million building is being constructed by a joint venture owned by Francis Gaegler, Frank D. Barlow and Broad Street Associates.

The 98,000-square-foot building, which will be managed by Omni Medical Affiliates Inc., is expected to be ready for occupancy in February.

When completed, the center will include a hotel, office and conference center, restaurants and 1 milllion square feet of commercial and office space. It is a project of the Prince George's County Economic Development Corp.

The law firm of Beers & Cutler leased 20,731 square feet from JBG Associates at 1250 Connecticut Ave. NW. The 10-year lease has an aggregate value of $5.5 million. Sun Micro leased 10,072 square feet at Tysons Commerce Center in Tysons Corner. The five-year lease has an aggregate value of $1 million. Northern Telecom Inc., an international telecommunications firm, leased 65,000 square feet at Centennial Tower in Tysons Corner. The law firm of Porter, Wright, Morris and Arthur leased 17,322 square feet from Richard Swesnick Co. at 1233 20th St. NW. The 10-year lease has an aggregate value of $4.7 million. Edw. R. Carr Cos. bought the Landmark Professional Building at 5249 Duke St. in Alexandria for $5.25 million. The New York law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges leased 25,897 square feet at 1615 L St. NW. It is a 10-year lease. Software Architecture & Engineering Inc. leased 23,850 square feet at 1600 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington. Bank of Virginia leased 38,814 square feet at the American Center in Tysons Corner. Group Hospitalization Inc. leased 10,713 square feet at 3702 Pender Dr. in Fairfax. The engineering firm of Radian Inc. leased 38,390 square feet in Huntwood Plaza at the intersection of Rte. 1 and Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria. Pailen-Johnson Associates leased 10,312 square feet at 8601 Westwood Dr. in Vienna. Storer Communications Inc. leased 8,538 square feet at Redwood Plaza on 1060 Arrowhead Dr. in Fairfax. Stanley Martin Cos. Inc. and P. Reed Wills III bought the the United Industrial District office park on V Street NE from New England Life Insurance Co. The price was not disclosed.
