The following firms have filed for bankruptcy protection recently with local clerk of court offices of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, a company is protected from claims by creditors while it attempts to reorganize its finances under a plan approved by the court.

In a Chapter 7 liquidation, a court trustee sells assets to pay creditors' claims.

The company then ceases operations.

Rockville Court Maryland Division Custom Cabinet at 6 Lakeview Circle, Greenbelt, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Aug. 15. The home improvement firm disclosed that its assets were less than $50,000 and its liabilities were between $50,000 and $99,000.

School House Square Partnership at 920 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, was the subject of an involuntary Chapter 11 reorganization petition Aug. 15.

The partnership owns office rental property subject to a $2 million mortgage note held by Home Federal Savings Bank.

The bankruptcy petition, filed by partner William Robert Oates, said the partnership was not making mortgage payments on the property and that a foreclosure sale for the property had been scheduled.

Two related restaurants, Burgers of L'Enfant Plaza at 460 L'Enfant Plaza, Washington, and Burgers of Columbia Pike at 3627 Columbia Pike, Arlington, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on Aug. 9 and Aug. 10, respectively. In both cases, assets and liabilities each were listed as between $500,000 and $999,000.

Norvail Development at 11120 Rockville Pike filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 16. The building contractor's financial information was not available.

Alexandria Division Eastern District of Virginia Aria Enterprise Inc. at 6436 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 15. The company, which imports photographic equipment, listed assets of $156,200 and liabilities of $112,235.

In its filing, Aria said it suffered a substantial fire loss on Feb. 22 and has an unresolved claim against Allstate Insurance Co. for that damage.

Southface Associates Inc. at 306 Garrisonville Rd., Stafford, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 15. The building contractor listed assets of $5.8 million and liabilities of $5.6 million.

Federal Air Service and Transport Inc. at P.O. Box 6148, Arlington, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 13. The freight company listed assets of $127,881 and liabilities of $437,370.

Port Office L.P. at 8545 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 13. The real estate developer, which owns 14.9 acres in St. Lucie, Fla., listed assets of $2,534,776 and liabilities of $1,549,590. The general partner of the firm is Churchman Corp.

M.C. Construction Co. at 14206 St. Clair Dr., Gainesville, Prince William County, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 13. The construction subcontractor listed assets of $209,909 and liabilities of $258,048.

Image Corp. of America, doing business as Image Decorating Centers, at 22854 Bryant Ct., Unit 103, Sterling, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 9. The retail chain listed assets of $2.8 million and liabilities of $3 million.

Cuisine Management Inc. at 8240 Leesburg Pike filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Aug. 9. The real estate management firm listed assets of $745,000 and liabilities of $413,660.74.
