Stock trading by corporate insiders often is a bellwether of corporate health. Most insiders buy stock or exercise options to make a profit. And insiders may be selling stock for tax reasons, estate planning or cash needs.

Marvin B. Ruffin, chairman of Allied Research Corp. of Baltimore, bought 5,000 common shares Aug. 20 at $1.38 each. Ruffin owns 321,062 shares directly and 9,600 shares indirectly.BANK MARYLAND CORP.

Hildebert F. Criste, chairman of Bank Maryland Corp. in Towson, Md., bought 10,000 common shares Aug. 23 at $ 6.25 each. Criste holds 67,552 shares directly and 26,030 shares indirectly.BTR REALTY INC.

David P. Gordon, a director of Linthicum, Md.-based BTR Realty Inc., bought 1,000 common shares at $4.13 a share Aug. 20. He holds 2,151 shares directly and 708,878 shares indirectly.COMMUNITY BANKSHARES INC.

B. Glenn Holden, a director of Community Bankshares Inc. of Petersburg, Va., bought 2,000 common shares Aug. 1 at unreported prices and now owns 10,050 shares directly.F&M BANCORP

R. Carl Benna, a director of Frederick, Md.-based F&M Bancorp, bought 1,000 common shares Aug. 15 at $17.50 each and currently holds 9,000 shares directly.

Albert H. Cohen, a director, bought 3,000 common shares at $17.50 each on Aug. 15. Cohen owns 42,266 shares directly and 16,012 shares indirectly.MCCORMICK & CO.

James J. Harrison Jr., an officer and director of McCormick & Co. of Hunt Valley, Md., sold 5,733 class V common shares Aug. 6 at $24 each. Harrison owns 20,226 class V shares directly and 1,026 class V shares indirectly.

Several executives of McCormick have exercised options to purchase class V shares:

Donald A. Palumbo, a vice president, acquired 1,140 shares Aug. 6 at $8.81 each. His direct class V holding is 6,730 shares.

Bailey A. Thomas, president, acquired 2,244 shares Aug. 3 at $13.38 each. Thomas controls 33,427 class V shares directly and 2,390 class V shares indirectly.
