The following firms have filed for bankruptcy protection recently with local clerk of court offices of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, a company is protected from claims by creditors while it attempts to reorganize its finances under a plan approved by the court. In a Chapter 7 liquidation, a court trustee sells assets to pay creditors' claims. The company then ceases operations.

Rockville Court District of Maryland

Sandy's Fabric Inc., doing business as Sewing Etc., of 3236 Superior Lane, Bowie, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Oct. 11. The fabric retailing firm listed assets and liabilities of between $100,000 and $499,000 each.

First Washington Realty Corp. of 14 Bloomingdale Ct., Rockville, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 10. The real estate investment company listed assets of $824,498 and liabilities of $802,560.

Cherie Phillips, doing business as Spectrum Publications, of 8814 Hunting Lane, No. 201, Laurel, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Oct. 10. She listed assets of $2,762 and liabilities of $26,127.

Alexandria Division Eastern District of Virginia

Loudoun Trucking Inc. of 220 Dry Mill Rd., Leesburg, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 5. The trucking firm listed assets of $125 and liabilities of $79,275.

G&H Printing Inc. of Stafford Executive Building No. 2, Stafford, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Oct. 5. The printing service listed assets of $8,198 and liabilities of $237,676.

Biggs & Associates Inc. of 7331 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 5. The accounting service listed assets of $48,241.65 and liabilities of 471,389.45.

Nova Mechanical Construction Inc. of 7950 Gainsford Ct., Bristow, Va., filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 9. The firm, which performs mechanical contracting services on commercial buildings, listed assets of $850,000 and liabilities of $1.2 million.

Vertex Inc. of 8200 Greensboro Dr., McLean, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 9. The computer firm listed assets of $114 and liabilities of $84,114.06.

District of Columbia

ARN Ltd. L.P., doing business as York Outlet Mall, of 1120 19th St. NW, Suite 460, in the District, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 10. The firm did not file a complete financial disclosure statement but listed about $15 million in claims arising out of lawsuits against it. The firm disputes those claims.

Wiltberger Inc. of 411 Florida Ave. NW filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Oct. 9. The real estate investment firm listed assets of $694,000 and liabilities of $682,000.
