Insider Transactions is a weekly report of stock transactions involving officers and directors of publicly owned local companies.
Stock trading by corporate insiders often is a bellwether of corporate health. Most insiders buy stock or exercise options to make a profit or may be selling stock for tax reasons.
The following insider transactions involving local companies were compiled by States News Service from reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
ALLIED RESEARCH CORP.
David E. Grange Jr., a director of Allied Research Corp. of Baltimore, bought 1,000 common shares at $2 each Sept. 28, bringing his direct holding to 2,000 shares.
CROP GENETICS INTERNATIONAL
Ann Crittenden, a shareholder of Crop Genetics International of Hanover, Md., sold 69,300 common shares at $3.25 to $4.75 each from Sept. 11 to Oct. 12 and now owns 25,700 shares directly.
FIRST VIRGINIA BANKS INC.
Gilbert R. Giordano, a director of First Virginia Banks Inc. of Falls Church, bought 2,000 common shares Sept. 24 through Sept. 25 at $18.50 to $19.32 each. Giordano now holds 1,000 shares directly and 2,500 shares indirectly.
HOLLYWOOD PARK REALTY ENTERPRISES INC.
Donald M. Robbins, an officer of Lanham-based Hollywood Park Realty Enterprises Inc., acquired 4,231 common shares Sept. 4 for an unreported price and now holds 4,231 shares directly.
INVESTORS FINANCIAL CORP.
David F. Cooke, a director of Investors Financial Corp. of Richmond, acquired 2,506 common shares through a plan Aug. 31 through Sept. 28 at $1.25 to $1.75 each, to bring his direct holding to 35,917 shares.
JAMES RIVER CORP.
John M. Nevin, a vice president of James River Corp. of Richmond, acquired 8,400 common shares for an undisclosed amount Sept. 3 and now holds 8,400 shares directly.
LITTLEFIELD, ADAMS & CO.
G. William Fleming, a director of Littlefield, Adams & Co. of Roanoke, bought 10,000 common shares Oct. 9 at 50 to 56 cents each. Fleming now owns 15,000 shares directly and 6,000 shares indirectly.
MCCORMICK & CO.
Bailey A. Thomas, president of McCormick & Co. of Hunt Valley, acquired 1,332 common shares for an undisclosed price Aug. 15. Thomas currently holds 35,324 shares directly and 1,332 shares indirectly.
OWENS & MINOR INC.
William F. Fife, a vice president of Owens & Minor Inc. of Glen Allen, Va., acquired 1,496 common shares at an unreported price Aug. 13 and now owns 90,134 shares directly.
R. Harwood Beville, a vice president of Rouse Co. of Columbia, Md.,bought 38,500 common shares at $11.25 to $11.75 each between Oct. 11 and Oct. 15. Beville controls 354,971 shares directly and 36,000 shares indirectly.
Anthony W. Deering, also a vice president, bought 8,000 common shares at $12.50 each Oct. 16. Deering owns 162,483 shares directly and 116,279 shares indirectly.
WEBSTER CLOTHES INC.
Samuel M. Feldman, president of Webster Clothes Inc. of Baltimore , disposed of 751,181 shares through an exchange Oct. 4 at $6 a share. He currently holds 124,106 shares directly.
Several directors also disposed of common shares through exchanges Oct. 4 at $6 per share:
Alfred I. Coplan disposed of 2,300 shares and no longer holds any common stock.
Gretchen V. Feldman disposed of 124,106 shares and now owns 809,181 shares indirectly.
