The following firms have filed for bankruptcy protection recently with local clerk of court offices of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code, a company is protected from claims by creditors while it attempts to reorganize its finances under a plan approved by the court.

In a Chapter 7 liquidation, a court trustee sells assets to pay creditors' claims.

The company then ceases operations.

Rockville Court District of Maryland

Water Works Inc., a Beltsville swimming pool supplies and maintenance company, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 19. The company listed assets of $140,000 and liabilities of $155,000.

Image Enterprises Inc., a cosmetic care and maintenance company, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 20. The Brunswick company listed assets of $2,200 and liabilities of $146,412. The company owes $140,000 to G&G Airpark Associates, in care of Annon Gershoni, the company's landlord.

Ian Homes Inc. of Rockville filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 19. The house construction company did not list assets or liabilities. The company owes $64,094 to Driggs Corp.

Lanham Property Investors L.P. of 1990 M St. NW in Washington filed for chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 19. The real estate development firm listed both assets and liabilities of more than $1 million.

Alexandria Division Eastern District of Virginia

Abingdon Apartments L.P. filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 15. The Northwest Washington real estate company listed liabilities of $3,159,144. It did not list assets.

Empire Services of Virginia Inc. filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 16. The Fredericksburg general contractor listed assets of $200,000 and liabilities of $377,551.

VCH Inc. of Leesburg filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on Nov. 16. The construction company listed assets of $2.3 million and liabilities of $2.4 million.

Sussex Corp. of Springfield filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on Nov. 16. The government contracting/information-management company listed assets of $9,913 and liabilities of $71,908.

Master Electric Contractors, Inc. of Fredericksburg filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 2. The company listed assets of $71,400 and liabilities of $112,972.

William E. Breidenbach Jr., doing business as Consolidated Electric Inc. of Centreville, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Nov. 8. the company listed assets of $120,155 and liabilities of $499,350.

Landmark Development Corporation of Alexandria filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 7. The company listed assets of $6.6 million and liabilities of $6.9 million.

District of Columbia

1900 Connecticut Avenue Associates L.P., doing business as Quality Inn Central, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 19.

The company did not list assets or liabilities.

The Aries Marketing Group Inc. filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Nov. 20.

The advertising company listed assets of $43,000 and liabilities of $274,085.

Satia Ltd. of 1325 18th St. NW filed for Chapter 11 reorganization Nov. 2. The company listed assets and liabilities of $600,000. No further information was available.

Sion Inc. of 1422 Wisconsin Ave. NW filed for Chapter 7 liquidation Nov. 7. No further information was available.
