Network Solutions Inc. of Herndon reported third-quarter net income of $7.3 million (21 cents a share), up 143 percent from $3 million (9 cents) in the same quarter of 1998.

The company cited brisk domain-name registration as well as an increase in value-added service sales. Network Solutions registers the majority of Web addresses worldwide.

Net revenue for the quarter was $59.3 million, a 133 percent increase from the same period in 1998.

For the first nine months of the year, the company earned $17.9 million (51 cents) on net revenue of $144.9 million, up from earnings of $7.5 million (23 cents) on net revenue of $62.4 million a year earlier.

The company handily beat Wall Street expectations of 18 cents a share.

* Dan River Inc. of Danville, Va., reported net income for the third quarter of $8.2 million (36 cents a share), up from $5.8 million (31 cents) for the same period last year. Sales rose 31 percent, to $155.8 million from $118.6 million in the year-ago period.

The textile maker's results were affected by some one-time items, including a tax benefit from a charitable contribution, which increased net income by $2.9 million, or 13 cents a share. Without these items, the company earned $5.3 million, or 23 cents a share.

For the nine months ended Oct. 2, the company reported net income of $12.7 million (55 cents), compared with $17.7 million (94 cents) during the same period in 1998. Sales increased 34 percent, to $479.4 million from $358.1 million.
