Metrocall Inc. of Alexandria lost $48 million on revenue of $151.8 million in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $33.8 million on revenue of $105 million in the same period of 1998.

The paging and wireless communications company said its subscriber units, an indication of how many customers it has, increased 36 percent from year to year, to 5.88 million.

In the first nine months, Metrocall lost $140.5 million on revenue of $462.4 million, compared with a loss of $97.6 million on revenue of $312.5 million last year.

Global TeleSystems Group Inc. of McLean lost $121.9 million in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $63.7 million in the same period in 1998. But its revenue increased 93 percent, to $227.9 million, from $118.3 million in the quarter last year.

Global TeleSystems, which provides broadband telecommunications services primarily in Europe, lost $394 million on revenue of $599.1 million in the first nine months, compared with a loss of $161.5 million on revenue of $230.5 million in the first nine months of 1998.

Digex Inc. of Beltsville lost $20.8 million on revenue of $16.1 million in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $3.6 million on revenue of $6.2 million in the same period of 1998.

The Internet service and Web site-hosting company lost $42.6 million on revenue of $38.1 million in the first nine months, compared with a loss of $12.3 million on revenue of $14.9 million in the same period of 1998.
