These are the Rollover Resistance Ratings for 2003-model sport-utility vehicles as determined by the New Car Assessment Program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, posted Dec. 4, 2002, on the NHTSA Web site. Cars and SUVs were also rated in other safety categories, which are not included here.

According to NHTSA: "The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single-vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how 'top-heavy' a vehicle is. The more 'top-heavy' the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1 star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5 stars)."

In opposing this rating system, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers has pointed out that NHTSA measures only the height of the center of gravity and the track width of a vehicle. Then a mathematical formula estimates the vehicle's resistance to rolling over, assuming it's already involved in a crash. A vehicle's likelihood to roll over is influenced by more than two dozen factors, the alliance says, and cannot be reduced to a simple star rating system based just on two measurements and on a stationary vehicle.

The alliance has called for testing on moving vehicles.
