Deloitte plans to hire about 150 people over the next three months. Gene Procknow, managing director, Federal Practice, talked with The Post's Andrea Caumont.

QWhat does your company do?

ADeloitte is one of the largest professional services firms in the world. We provide consulting, audit, tax and financial advisory services. Our federal practice provides those services to the federal government, working with leaders across the defense and civilian agencies. It's one of our fastest growing practices. We've put a lot of energy into it.

What do you think your employees would say were the best reasons for working at your company?

I think that they would say there's something different about working here. We are a very collegial environment and people are comfortable working here. They're comfortable with the people they work with and the policies we have here. An example is our mentorship program. It's the partners' responsibility to grow the next generation of partners. We're not out to meet quarterly profits, we're out to develop a business for the long term. We evaluate our people based upon their ability to develop others. If you track and develop good people, the basic economics of our business will be supported by that.

Who owns your company?

Deloitte is a partnership, owned by over 5,000 partners worldwide and 2,300 partners and directors in the United States. We are a privately held entity. That also gives us a real leg up because we don't have to report quarterly progress. We can think and act long-term. We've been in business for 150 years. It helps make investments like growing our Federal Practice a lot easier.

What sense of stability can your company offer job candidates?

We're 150 years old. We're also a $15 billion firm. We have a strong track record for retaining people. According to some analysts, we have the lowest turnover among our key competitors and that helps us keep people, who in turn give us the ability to win in the marketplace. We also have a portfolio of businesses that provides stability. That allows us to weather any downturn in one sector. Because we have a broad set of services, clients look to us to do a number of things, and we're not dependent on any one service or client. Our federal practice is growing substantially. We have the best of both worlds: an entrepreneurial company and a large stable firm.

What are the demographics of your company?

We have a very diverse population. Two things we've done to encourage that is our women's initiative and our diversity program. For the last 10 consecutive years, we've been named one of the top places to work by Working Woman magazine. We've been very good at women's initiatives and it's been a really positive thing for us. Likewise with diversity. We've been in Diversity Inc.'s top 50 companies and the top 10 for recruiting minorities. That's critical to us in our success. Deloitte's United States firm is 46 percent female and 18 percent minority. The board of directors of the U.S. firm is 22 percent female, including one minority.

What positions do you have available and what level of expertise do you want?

We have 150 positions available. In our assurance and enterprise risk services area we're looking for professionals who will support federal financial management initiatives, accounting, auditing, internal controls and information security. We also have openings for people in management consulting, in the areas of strategy and operations, technology integration, enterprise applications and human capital.

We're looking for people who have deep federal government experience as well as people who have commercial experience. We want to bring commercial best practices to the federal government. The buyers have been very responsive to that. People in the Treasury and FDIC are expecting to have consultants that understand the financial services industry. That's a real key thing here in our business model.

We're interested in people at the entry level all the way up through highly experienced individuals. We're hiring throughout the spectrum. We're looking for people that want to make a difference, someone who wants a career here with us, who will want to grow and develop here. We're not looking for people who just want a job. We believe that for a company to be effective in professional services it has to grow, and that means each individual has to grow as well. We're looking for people with energy, drive and enthusiasm.
