Vastera plans to hire about 30 people in the next two months. Ruffin Price, vice president of human resources, talked with The Post's Andrea Caumont.
What does your company do?
Vastera is a worldwide leader in solutions for global trade management. We provide software, consulting services and managed services to help companies handle their importing and exporting of goods across borders. Vastera helps importers with tracking and management services to speed goods through ports and minimize costs. On the exporters' side, we help clients comply with regulatory licensing and documentation requirements. We streamline the whole process of international shipment for our customers.
What do you think your employees would say were the best reasons for working at your company?
One of the things I hear most often is that they truly believe in what the company does. Trade here is a second language to most people. Our employees believe we provide a service that truly benefits our clients. We were founded in 1992, and most employees could say, "I was employee number 76." We provide cutting-edge software and our managed services organization combines the business processes with our leading global trade management technology. We have a great expertise in that area. We can aid our customers and save them money and time in moving goods across borders. We also have a consulting group who are experts in all aspects of trade compliance. We have a dedicated, committed and talented workforce that believes in our products and vision.
Who owns your company?
We're publicly traded, owned by our stockholders.
What sense of stability can your company offer job candidates?
We have good, sound customers. We started in 1992 and in the business space we compete in, that's a long time. We survived a lot of the downturn. We're in the process of adding people in our most revenue-generating areas: sales, technology and managed services. We've pushed beyond just providing software. About two thirds of our business is providing import-export management for companies through our management and consulting groups. We have clients like Ford Motor, Lucent Technologies and Black & Decker. We provide a very stable environment for our employees.
What are the demographics of your company?
Companywide, we are 40 percent female and 22 percent minority. Within the 15-person senior management team, we are 6 percent female and 13 percent minority.
What positions do you have available and what level of expertise do you want?
We're hiring 15 people in our global solutions, engineering and development group. We're looking for a lot of solution engineers including developers, software engineers, systems analysts, content analysts, and quality assurance managers and engineers. A number of our employees have come from a background with the government. Eighty percent of these jobs will be based in the Dulles area.
We're also hiring 15 people in our managed services group, who will mostly be based in Michigan. We're looking for senior trade analysts and trade analysts with knowledge of trade compliance including HTS codes, export classification commodity numbers and knowledge of ocean, air and border customs operations. We also have one client manager position, who would manage our client relationships.
All of these positions require at least two to five years of experience.
