Mrs. John Robert Glyer of Washington.D.C. was married February 1 to the Honorable Robert Nelson Smith, M.D., of Washington and Toledo, in the Cadet Chapel, United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Dr. Smith, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, until his resignation in Janurary to resume private practice in Toledo, was appointed by President Ford in 1976 with overall supervision of medical facilities and medical personnel, world wide, of the Armed Forces. Dr. Smith also served as chariman of the board of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and was a member of the board of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the National Health Planning Council.

The new Mrs. Smith, known professionally as the political journalist Gwen Riggle Glyer, is a graduate of Ohio State University and the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Yale University.

Dr. Smith is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, a delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association, and served as president of the Ohio State Medical Association, 1969-70. He attended the University of Michigan, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Nebraska.
