Brass spiral candelabrums, entwined with English ivy and fern, glowed in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg, Va. when Marcia Wood Torrence became the bride of Russell Wayne Johnson on the evening of September 30. The Rev. Timothy L. Croft, pastor, officiated at the double ring ceremony, with Dr. Norman Blake at the organ and Homer L. Chryasikos the soloist, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart B. Torrence of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of the Lynchburg area, parents of the bride, entertained with a reception at Oakwood Country Club.
The bride, escorted and given in marriage by her father, wore a Victorian-inspired gown of whispery ivory chiffon appliqued with Brussels lace. It had a Queen Anne neckline and a Bertha lace Queen of Franks collar; long fitted sleeves fell into a flounce of lace over her wrists, and the accordion pleated skirt flowed from the fitted waist into a flounced chapel train. Framing her lovely face was a chapel length mantilla of bridal illusion with matching lace border, and her bouquet was a cascade of stephanotis, English ivy and rosebuds, centered with a bridal orchid.
Mrs. Samual Phillips, cousin of the bride and matron of honor, was gowned in circular tunic layers of peach qiana and the bridesmaids: Mrs. Robert Kelly, Janet Frederick, Debra Tuggle, and Margaret Victoria Johnson, sister of the groom, were in matching gowns of rusty spice.
Mr. Johnson chose his father as best man and his brother, Michael, as senior usher assisted by Randy Gore, Mark Osborne, and Paul Staley.
The bride is the granddaughter of Mrs. L. Wood Sr. of Lynchburg and the late Mr. Wood and the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin D. Torrence of Concord, Va. She graduated in June from Lynchburg General-Marshall Lodge Hospital School of Nursing and is now with Prince William County Hospital in Manassas.
The groom is the son of Mrs. Mayford V. Johnson and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall M. Anderson and the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Johnson, all of Wilkesboro, N.C. A graduate in business administration from Appalachian State University (N.C.), Mr. Johnson is sales manager for Lowes, Inc., in Manassas, Va. Inc.
After a wedding trip to St. Thomas the couple are at home at Lake Jackon in Manassas.
