I think Hank Burchard is still [weekend, January 12] begging the question as to why nice people hunt deer, and why nicer people object. First, pigs, chickens and cows need to be killed so people will have food to eat. If people went out and hunted pigs, cows and chickens for sport -- fro fun -- there would be an equal hue and cry. The fact is, there is no reason to kill animals for the sake of entertainment unless one simply doesn't care if they live or die...

Second, the argument that they would die of starvarion is the all-time question-begging answer. Would the very deer you kill die of starvation? Perhaps he would live out his normal life span and some other deer, the one you miss, would die of starvation. There is a Bambi Syndrome, but there is also a God Syndrome among hunters -- enen intelligent ones like yourself -- who pretend they are simply doing nature's work by kiling animals that might starve anyway. This is pretty much the same as going around shooting poor people in India and derelicts who will probably starve someday anyway. If you can justify the one, why not the other? I don't think deer have humanlike feelings, and it's pointless to take their "side," but the real reason nice people object to other nice people hunting is that they are going out of their way to end life just to amuse themselves. It's not a harmless pastime; it's a smug, murderous one.

Hank Burchard says most of his friends, including his wife, agree with Mr. Nachman .
