Now that Christmas is out of the way, the next hurdle in the fashion department is figuring out what to wear New Year's Eve. With only five days left before the clock strikes in the new decade, and no energy to trudge back to the stores, the only logical solution is to unearth the sewing machine, find a super-easy pattern, some festive glittery or stainy fabric and whip up soething to knock'em dead.

New Year's Eve is one of the few evenings of the year that almost anything goes -- sequins, rhinestones, beading and satins -- whether you're celebrating the new decade at a big splashy restaurant or at a small home gathering.

"I saw a glittery camisole in a store for $100. You can make it yourself, using the most expensive sequinned fabric, for only $30, since the camisole takes only 1 1/4 yards to make," says Diana Shiel of Vogue-Butterick. Her recommendation for a quick New Year's Eve ensemble: Butterick Pattern 6847. The pattern has pieces for simple elastic-waist pants, camisole, loose jacket, skirt and jumpsuit, which can be mixed or matched with things you already have in your wardrobe.

If you already own black silk pajama pants, you can spend just a few hours making a camisole out of a bugle-beaded fabric. Or if you have the weekend to devote, make pants, top and jacket out of contrasting jewel-toned satin or medium-weight crepe fabric.

Beth Keillor from Simplicity says that Simplicity's Super Jiffy Pattern 9191 tunic can be created in just a couple of hours by an experienced sewer and in an evening for the less skilled. It has only three pattern pieces and a fold-back rever (front). If made in a silky or satiny fabric, it can be worn with pants already in your wardrobe and is good for any figure type: sashed tightly at the waist for those blessed with thin hips and bloused over a loosely tied belt for the those not so lucky.

If a dress is more your style, try Very Easy Vogue 7344 for a tube dress with straps, or Vogue 7334 for a bare-top wrap. McCall's has a good slim sheath with a low back and side-slit in pattern 6824.

If you take the time now, something you create yourself at home could save you money and get you the look -- and fit -- you want. And you won't see yourself coming and going as the clock strikes 12.
