In Jakarta, Indonesia, Leonard Liles Funk and Marilyn Godlewski Bassford announced their engagement at a New Year's Eve party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. William Smith. Mr. Funk is a representative for Gloval International Forwarders in Jakarta and Ms. Bassford is Clinical Trials Director for the Lipid Research Clinic of George Washington University in this city. The betrothed met in Saigon, Vietnam when she was with the U.S. Army. They plan to marry in the fall.

Mr. Funk is a graduate of the University of Washington and a former district assistant in the Spokane office of Congressman Thomas S. Foley. He is the son of Albert H. Funk of Spokane, Wash. and the late Ruby Liles Funk and grandson of former mayor of Spokane, the late Leonard Funk.

Ms. Bassford, a resident of Arlington, Va., spent Christmas in Jakarta. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1969 from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing and will complete a master of public administration in health care in July at American University here. She is the daughter of Benjamin Peter Godlewski and Elsie Black McKeown Godlewski of Windsor, Ct. and granddaughter of Myrtle Black McKeown of Manchester, Ct. and the late Robert William McKeown, who emigrated from County Armagh, Ireland. Her late paternal grandparents are Julius Adam Godlewski and Felicia Korazewski Godlewski of Hartford, Ct., originally of Krakow, Poland.
