The engagement of Amanda Roberts Smith to Michael Thomas Wharton is announced by the future bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bond Smith, Jr. of Brookside, N.J. Mr. Wharton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Wharton of Rockville, Md.

Miss Smith is a granddaughter of Mr. C. Leslie Hammond, Rochester, N.Y. and the late Mrs. Hammond and of Mrs. J. Bond Smith, Takoma Park, Md. and the late Mr. Smith. Mr. Wharton's grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James F. Breen, Winter Park, Fla. and the late Mr. and Mrs. Denver Wharton, Johnstown, Pa.

Miss Smith's father is an admiralty lawyer and a partner in the New York law firm of Lord, Day & Lord. Mr. Wharton's father is a partner in the Rockville, Md. firm of McCarthy & Wharton.

Miss Smith, an alumna of St. John the Baptist School, Mendham, N.J., attended Sweet Briar College and graduated magna cum lauda from Jacksonville University. She is the Baltimore County Criminal Justice Coordinator's Office and is also pursuing studies for a master's degree in criminal justice at the University of Baltimore. Her fiance graduated from Our lady of Good Counsel, Wheaton, Md., and with distinction from the University of Virginia. He is a third-year student at the University of Maryland Law School and in the fall will be associated with the law firm of Piper & Marbury in Baltimore.

A September wedding is planned.
