Mr. and Mrs. John Paul Guttenberg, Jr. of Alexandria, Va. announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen Lee, to Thomas Upton Greer, Jr., son of Major General and Mrs. Thomas Upton Greer, also of Alexandria.

A graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Miss Guttenberg attended Randolph-Macon College (Va.) and is a secretary with the Mellon-Stuart Company of Washington, D.C. Her father is president of Guttenberg Associates, a Washington public affairs consulting firm.

Mr. Greer graduated from Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, attended Florida State University, and is employed by the Old Mews Construction Company of Alexandria. His father is Directorate of Management for the Chief of Staff of the United States Army.

Miss Guttenberg is the granddaughter of Mrs. Eleanore Lee Swartz of Easton, Pa. and the late Mark T. Swartz, Jr., and of the late Mr. and Mrs. John P. Guttenberg of Rochester, N.Y. She is the fourth great-granddaughter of Edward Hicks, the 19th Century American folk artist best known for his painting of "The Peaceable Kingdom." Mr. Greer is the grandson of Mrs. Frank U. Greer of Greensille, S.C. and the late Brigadier General Greer and of Mrs. Margaret D. Ayrault of Rochester, N.Y. and Mr. William W. Ayrault of Oswego, N.Y.

A June wedding is planned.
