To pursue a "Republican Look,"Democrats Teri Jarboe and Katy Kelly list these discount stores as likely sources:
: FROCKS AT THE DOCKS, Old Towne, Alexandria, near the waterfront. A wide variety of merchandise to suit many different tastes. All clothing is 50 percent off and goes much lower. Fairly frequent sales, during which they mark everything in the store $15, or two for $25. Occasionally as low as tow for $15. Run by Mr. and Mrs. John Fee and their three daughters. Mrs. Fee will, if asked, make efforts to obtain a particular garment for a customer.
Sizes range from 4 to 26 1/2. Everything here is manufacturer's overrun. Among the names carried: Gloria Vanderbilt, Charlotte Ford, Yves St. Laurent and Oscar de la Renta.
HELEN'S HANDBAGS, Loehmann's Plaza, Falls Church. Carries discount designer handbags from 20 to 50 percent off. Merchandise is all high quality and includes a large selection of snakeskin and leather purses. They also feature beaded and mesh evening bags. Twice yearly sales.
LOEHMANN'S. It has been said that"Women buy their accessories at Saks, but their clothes at Loehmann's." The Back Room in Loehmann's, Rockville and Falls Church, are both carrying an Oscar de la Renta gown that is similar in design to the onw worn by Mrs. Reagan at the Inaugural Gala. A Charlotte Ford that was featured in last month's Vogue was selling for $249. Other designers in plentiful supply: Bill Blass, Adolfo and Albert Nipon.
Memo to the modest on Loemann's communal dressing rooms: If you have dimples in your thighs, you can be sure that changing next to you will be a perfect size 4.
THE SHOE SHOP, Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda. A high-fashion designer store carrying Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Charles Jourdan, Manolo Blahnik, Joan & David, Anne Klein and Andrew Geller at remarkable prices. They have two sales anually and reduce some shoes by as much as 75 percent. During their winter sale, a pair of Anne Klien leather pumps was reduced from $120 to $35.
SHOW WORLD, a chain store, which recently opened a branch in Rockville. Features everything from the sophisticated to the wacky. Strictly a no-frills establishment, to the point of no discerable foot measure in the place. Worth the effect; all shoes are priced at $10.88. One customer recently bought a pair of red silk open-toed high heels retailing at department stores for $96.
STATUS II, Chevy Chase. A small shop that carries many designers, but specializes in Yves St. Laurent and Valentino. They carry a classic line of separates and evening wear and cater to a repeat business. Prices range from 50 to 80 percent off the original price.
