Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bell Laurent of Alexandria, Va. announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret Funsten, to Joseph Stanley Gordy of Jacksonville, Fla.

Miss Laurent, presented at the Alexandria Christmas Cotillion in 1974, is an alumna of Sweet Briar College, was a recipient of a George C. Marshall undergraduate scholarship, and spent her junior year in Florence, Italy. Awarded a Rotary International Graduate Fellowship, Miss Laurent studied medieval Italian literature at the Universita degli Studi, Padua, Italy. She is the great-great niece of the late Senator Carter Glass, (D-Va.), Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson, the late Marion Glass Banister, Assistant Treasurer of the United States, and the late Dr. Meta Glass, President of Sweet Briar College, 1925-1946. Miss Laurent's father is associated with the Washington Post Company and is adjunct professor of communications at The American University.

Mr. Gordy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Newell Stanley Gordy, Jr. of Alexandria, is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston University, and received his master's degree in Health Care Administration from George Washington University. He is currently the administrator at Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital and Baker County Nursing Home, Macclenny, Fla. The future groom's father is associated with Halifax Security.
