If you can't make it to the Cloisters, you can make a zoetrope at home. Here's how:

Make a drum out of a cylinder about 5" high, open on top and closed on the bottom. An oatmeal box or hatbox or any other round box will do.

Make evenly spaced slots 3/16" wide and 1 1/2 " from the top down, spaced between 1 1/2" and 3 1/2" apart; the spacing between the slots must be the same all the way around the box, and is determined by how many slots will fit evenly around the circle.

Take a 3"-wide strip of paper as long as the inside diameter of the drum and divide it into equal sections, each as wide as the space between the slots in the drum. Draw an image in each section. Use the same image in each drawing, but make it change a little in each section.

Put the strip inside the drum and put a thumbtack through the center of the drum into the eraser end of a pencil. Spin the drum on that to make the images move. Or put the drum on a record player or Lazy Susan or anything else that spins.
