Harvey admits he was showing off when, going faster than usual, he fell -- "I didn't have time to even think" -- and landed with both hands tucked beside his breastbone. The result was a spiral fracture of one hand and a canceled ski trip to Utah. "My only consolaton," he says, "is that ski patrol said it was the best fall he'd ever seen."

BIG BOULDER -- Lake Harmony, Pa., 225 miles. Five inches of new snow, but no change in the base, 36" to 60". The surface is natural powder and groomed. Five lifts and 10 trails are open. Night skiing Tuesday to Saturday until 10. Verttical drop, 475' 717/772-0104.

BRADDOCK HEIGHTS -- Braddock Heights, Md., 40 miles. No new snow. Base, a modest three to eight inches. Machine-made, packed-powder surface. CAMELBACK -- Tannersville, Pa., 230 miles. Three to four inches of fresh snow; base, 35" to 75" Packed-powder surface. Twnety-two trails and ten chair lifts are in operation. Night skiing 5 to 10. Vertical drop, 800'. 717/629-1661.

ELK MOUNTAIN -- Union Dale, Pa., 270 miles. After last week, Elk Mountan recovered nicely, said the manager. Eight inches of new snow. Base 30" to 64" Packer-powered surface.Five lifts and 16 trails available. Night skiing Monday through Saturday, 4:30 to 10. Vertical drop, 1,1001. 800/679-2611.

HIDDEN VALLEY -- Somerset, Pa., 191 miles. Like its neighbors, Hidden Valley got eight more inches of snow. The base, 9" to 48", increased slightly. Packed-powder surface. All nine trals are open in addition to four lifts and one rope tow. Cross-country skiers have 28 kilometers. Vertical drop, 400'. 814/443-1414.

JACK FROST -- White Haven, Pa., 250 miles. Five inches of new snow Base 42" to 72". Natural powder and groomed surface. Thirteen trails and five lifts open. Cross-country skiing. No night skiing. Vertical drop, 500'. 717/443-8425.

LAUREL MOUNTAIN -- Boswell, Pa., 190 miles. Five inches of fresh snow. The surface is groomed machine and natural snow. In snow-machine areas the base is 12" to 36" inches; 2" to 16" in natural snow zones. Ten slopes and all three lifts are open. Night skiing, 4:30 to 10:30. 412/238-6688.

MASSANUTTEN -- Harrisonburg, Va., 125 miles. Machine-worked, packed-powder surface with a reduced base of 30" to 55". Nine trails and three lifts in operation. Daly 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Vertical drop, 795'. 703/289-9441.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Champion, Pa., 190 miles. In machine-snow areas the bbase is up six inches, at 18" to 54". All 16 trails and nine lifts are open. Night skiing until 11. Vertical drop, 997'. 814/352-7777.

SKI LIBERTY -- Fairfield, Pa., 65 miles. The average base is 22" to 48", with a wet, granular surface. All 14 trails, four lifts and one J-bar are open. They advertise night skiing from 5 to 10, but they close the more enjoyable and demanding backside of the mountain at 9:30. Night skiing lift ticket is $9, rental gear $7. Free parking. SKI ROUNDTOP -- Lewisberry, Pa., 121 miles. The base of 22" to 44" is topped by a groomed, granular surface. Ten trails, five lifts and one J-bar operating. Night skiing every night, 6 to 10. Vertical drop, 600'. 800/233-1134.

WINTERGREEN -- Wintergreen, Va., 168 miles. No new snow. Base 36" to 72" with a machine-worked, granular surface. Seven trails and three chairs are open.
