After a whirlwind weekend that began with their first meeting since a 1976 divorce, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton drove off together early today amid hints that their romance of two decades was blossoming again.
Asked if they were contemplating a third marriage, Burton snapped to a reporter: "We are." However, Taylor shouted from their limousine: "He is married and I am married." The two, who have been married to each other twice, are separated from their current spouses.
Saturday night, they danced cheek-to-cheek at a glittering party marking Taylor's 50th birthday. Taylor danced barefoot with other guests before she left with Burton early in the morning. His car dropped her at the suburban house where she is staying before taking Burton to his suite at the Dorchester Hotel.
They sat next to each other at dinner. At one point Taylor jokingly stuck out her tongue at Burton. The two walked hand-in-hand into the nightclub Legends, where 120 guests included ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev and former Beatle Ringo Starr.
There was speculation the occasion would be the scene for a reconciliation between the two stars, although originally Burton had not been invited.
But the Welsh actor, leaving Taylor's apartment at dawn Sunday, snapped at reporters who asked whether he would be seeing her again.
"That's a repulsive and obscene question," answered Burton.
Last night Taylor made a surprise appearance at a London theater while Burton was giving a benefit reading of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' play "Under Milk Wood."
Taylor mounted the stage, kissed Burton and held his hand. She blew a kiss to the packed house, telling the audience softly in Welsh, "I love you."
"Say it again, my petal," Burton interjected. "Say it louder." She did, to applause.
Earlier Taylor, in London to make her British stage debut in the Broadway hit "The Little Foxes," said when asked if the reunion was a publicity gimmick: "This is no publicity stunt, honey."
Taylor recently separated from her sixth husband, Sen. John Warner (R-Va.). Burton's lawyers recently announced he and his third wife, Susan Hunt, had been separated since August after five years of marriage.
