The on-again, off-again status of Caleb Deschanel's THE ESCAPE ARTIST has switched back to on-again. Warner Brothers announced that this wandering little gem will finally open in Washington on November 19. Two other summer drop-outs, the Bette Midler vehicle JINXED and Jerry Belson's satirical farce JEKYLL AND HYDE. . . TOGETHER AGAIN, have suddenly resurfaced as fall releases. "Jinxed" arrives this Friday, swelling an opening list that already includes FIRST BLOOD, MONSIGNOR, BURDEN OF DREAMS, HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH, THE SENDER and LE BEAU MARIAGE.

November 12 is the tentative opening date for JEKYLL AND HYDE. Three films previously scheduled to open early in October -- BOB LE FLAMBEUR, THE MISSIONARY and THE PERSONALS -- have been postponed, the first to October 29 and the others to November 5 at the earliest. The anti-CIA expose ON COMPANY BUSINESS gets a limited engagement at the Inner Circle starting the 29th, which still appears to have FITZCARRALDO and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CLASS REUNION firmly committed.

Bob Starbird and Gene Miller of the Open University plan a program called THE FILMS OF STEVEN SPIELBERG Wednesday at 7 at Immaculate Conception Academy, 2408 K Street NW. The instructors will show excerpts from JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK on videotape and lead a group discussion. Call 966-9606.
