There is a peace poster that reads, "It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale." The great day hasn't arrived, but there will be a "Pentagon Bake Sale."
The House of Representatives is to vote on the fat Pentagon budget today, and the bake sale will be held at the nearby Cannon House Office Building. No, it's not that the budget cuts are so severe that the military brass will be forced to bag lunches, it's just a publicity gimmick of the National Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy.
Money from the sale of "MX" macaroons and "Star Wars" cookies will be offered to the Pentagon to encourage the decision-makers there to put the funds in personnel and not nuclear weapons. Reps. Barney Frank, Patricia Schroeder and Tom Downey are expected to attend but probably will not be selling baked goods. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger was invited to attend, but he said he had a previous commitment. Since the Pentagon can't accept the money anyway, the proceeds will go to the Morgan Day Care Center in Oxon Hill.
