Director Mike Nichols and the "Heartburn" cast and crew have finished shooting and closed up shop with a party at the Safari Grill in Manhattan. In addition to Nichols and "Heartburn" author Nora Ephron, nearly 200 were invited to celebrate the end of shooting in Washington and New York. Jack Nicholson wasn't there, but other actors in the movie were, including Karen Akers, Richard Masur, Meryl Streep and Catherine O'Hara. Also singer Carly Simon; Tricia Erickson, of the Erickson Agency that furnished extras for the show here; Steve Varsano, one of the Washington extras who achieved some fame recently when he was named "Cosmopolitan" magazine bachelor of the month; and Kevin O'Brien, former general manager of WTTG-Metromedia here and now general manager of WNEW-Metromedia in New York . . .
It may seem a bit early to be discussing where the 1988 Republican national nominating convention will be held, but then this is Washington, where 1988 is only around the corner. According to the National Journal, Los Angeles is the early favorite. "Miami Vice" notwithstanding, Miami is a definite no, and Houston is said to be out because the Republicans did Texas the last time. California, of course, has a big bunch of electoral votes, and L.A. is close to President Reagan's ranch, making it easy for him to get back and forth, brokering and getting into his new role as the party's elder statesman . . .
Anyone who has ever worked or covered a political campaign complains bitterly about the hours worked, the terrible fast food consumed and the scheduling snafus. But as in all good war stories, there's more pleasure than pain in the memories, especially for those who rode out an underfinanced, losing campaign. That's why the survivors of the 1976 Mo Udall for President campaign are getting together Oct. 26 -- at the Capitol Holiday Inn in memory of a confusing string of Holiday Inns. The candidate, who can tell better stories than anyone in the room, is expected, but his wife Ella, who obviously isn't anxious to relive that campaign, has politely RSVPed no thanks.
