LAST YEAR's ski season was nothing to brag about for most mid-Atlantic resort owners. A shortage of snow produced a severe shortage of downhillers. But many area resorts still dipped into their coffers to improve and expand operations.

In Claysburg, Pennsylvania, Blue Knob's new management begins its third season with some impressive improvements. Three new slopes have been added for intermediate to advanced skiers. The resort now has 18 slopes to choose from, and a new triple chair lift puts Blue Knob's total lift capacity at 4,800 skiers per hour. The intermediate run Mambo Alley has been regraded and widened and snowmaking machines have been installed. A new pond holding almost 35 million gallons of water now means that 85 percent of Blue Knob can get man- made snow.

Camelback in Tannersville, Pennsylvania, has spent more than $1 million on improvements, including the addition of two new ski trails, the 2,550-foot Bactrian (named after the two- humped camel) for novice skiers, and the 1,200-foot Rappahannock Ramble, also for novice skiers.

The area's newest downhill resort is 210 miles away from Washington and inside the city limits of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Montage opened late last year with nine slopes and trails for beginners through expert skiers. The area will be the mid-Atlantic regional site for the Grand Marnier Race set for February 1-2.

Timberline, in Davis, West Virginia, was sold last October and will not open this season "because we just haven't had time to do the groundwork," says Dave Nafziger, who works for the new owner. "We'll be looking forward to a good year in the '86-'87 season."
