When British Ambassador Sir Antony Acland came to Washington less than a year ago, it was quickly noticed that he was an available man. He's not available anymore. The London Times has reported and the British Embassy has confirmed that Acland will be married July 28 in London to Jenny McGougan, a longtime family friend. McGougan, 48, is the divorced mother of three girls and one boy. She works as a part-time citizen judge in London.

The 56-year-old ambassador's wife died three years ago in London when he was permanent undersecretary of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has three grown children. Both the Acland and McGougan families are from Devon in southwest England and the couple have known each other from childhood. The Aclands will be back in town toward the end of August ...

And as for the rumor printed yesterday in the New York Daily News that Sen. John Warner -- another of the other most eligible men in Washington -- was to marry a Britisher, the Marchioness of Northampton, Warner said: "British gossip at its best, but with an inaccurate conclusion. She is, indeed, a good friend, but that's all." Warner is still there among the eligibles, along with Deputy Secretary of State John Whitehead and CIA Director William Webster.

Singer Michael Jackson has some strange interests. He is apparently so determined to own the remains of the "Elephant Man" John Merrick that his publicist says he has offered $1 million. Merrick, who died in 1890, was hideously deformed, suffering from a rare disease. His life inspired the 1980 movie that garnered eight Academy Award nominations. Jackson made an initial bid to buy the remains last month but was turned down by the London Hospital Medical College where the skeleton is on display ...

New York producer Beverly Karp made what turned out to be a wise decision when she turned down a $2 million divorce settlement offered by her husband's attorney. Last week, she was awarded $7 million. The amount fell short of the 50-50 split she would have received in a community property state like California. The joint net worth with her husband Harvey L. Karp during their 31-year marriage was listed at $20 million. Attorneys in the case said the $7 million was the largest equitable distribution award ever tried to conclusion in New York and possibly nationwide. Beverly Karp was coproducer of the movie "My Dinner With Andre" ...
