LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, AUG. 30 -- Italy's porn-star-turned-parliamentarian Ilona Staller dismissed suggestions of a rift with her Radical Party backers today and said she hoped for a further four-year term to push a program of greater sexual freedom.
Staller, better known by her stage name Cicciolina (Little Fleshy One), is in Switzerland for a series of shows at a local nightclub, part of an extensive European tour staged since winning a surprise victory -- and massive publicity -- in Italy's June election.
"I got 20,000 votes in the election and although some were protest or joke votes, most people voted for me out of conviction," Staller told reporters in the dark, cramped nightclub where she performed last night.
Wearing a tight blue tulip dress, pink high heels and flowered head band, she had earlier bared her left breast for photographers before posing with a startled young Italian street entertainer in front of a local church.
"As for disagreements with fellow parliamentarians, that is quite normal," Staller said, denying suggestions of a rift with Radical Party head Marco Pannella.
According to Italian press reports, the Radicals, a small fringe party concerned mainly with civil rights, have been embarrassed by the massive media attention Staller scored in an otherwise lackluster election campaign.
Staller, reported to be in her late thirties, said she did not intend to follow usual Radical Party practice and step down halfway through the life of the four-year parliament.
"I might even need another four years," she said.
