It won't help, but the network insists that "H.E.L.P." -- a drama about a New York emergency unit of cops and firefighters -- will return after a much-needed rest. In five outings so far, "H.E.L.P." has averaged a 6.8 Nielsen rating and a 12 percent audience share, to rank 111th among 120 series tried out on the four networks this season ...

"Sunset Beat" doesn't sound like a lot of help for the 8 p.m. timeslot either. It's about a bunch of motorcyclists disguised as undercover L.A. cops. Or is it the other way around? Anyway, it debuts with a two-hour pilot on April 21 ...

Speaking of ABC pilots, the two-hour debut of its new newspaper drama, "Capital News," barely hit the front porch Monday night, averaging a 10.1 national Nielsen rating and a 17 percent audience share between 9 and 11 ...

By comparison, CBS's comedy lineup averaged a 13.5/23 during the same two hours while Part II of the "Jesus of Nazareth" rerun on NBC averaged an 11.9/29 ...

A Bob Hope special on NBC averaged an 11.3/19 at 8 p.m... .

Locally, "Capital News" delivered only a 6.5/11 on Channel 7 while the Hope special on Four did a 10.4/17. Each local ratings point represents 17,271 households ...

"Capital News" will air in the 10 p.m. Monday timeslot henceforth ...

Also Monday, the opening game of the season for the Baltimore Orioles, against the Kansas City Royals, averaged a 2.1/7 on Channel 20 between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m... .

ABC also announced that on Saturday, April 21, starting at 10, it will air "The 18th Annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award: A Salute to Sir David Lean." Hosted by Gregory Peck, it is already a leading candidate for the coveted longest-title-of-the-year award ...
