There is something interchangeable about lawyers and the clients they accept. New York attorney Roy Grutman and Washington writer Bill Thomas explain the way the lawyer game is played in their recently released book "Lawyers and Thieves." In the Simon and Schuster book, Grutman points out how he had been Penthouse magazine's attorney in a case brought by Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell. Grutman grilled Falwell on the stand for 45 minutes and won his case.

Falwell congratulated Grutman and said if he ever needed a good lawyer he would be in touch. "It wouldn't bother me to use Bob Guccione's doctor," he said. "Why shouldn't I use his attorney?" Two years later Falwell hired Grutman to help him get Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt. The authors wrote in the book that Falwell understands the essential truth of the legal profession: "A lawyer is a utensil, like a knife or fork. It makes no difference who ate with it last, only that it was sufficiently sanitized between meals."

This week, so quiet as to be unnoticed, a new restaurant named Sequoia is opening in that space. It will be fully operational by Tuesday. Paul Gordon, the general manager, said there will be no official party for the 1,000-seat restaurant with a menu heavy on seafood ...
