The Ronald Reagan Library is nearing completion near Simi Valley, Calif., with a target date of Feb. 6, the former president's 80th birthday, but it looks as though his papers won't be available for a number of years. Reagan is the first president to come under a 1978 law that makes his papers the property of the federal government and gives the National Archives five years to process them. "We would prefer to use the full five years for processing," said John T. Fawcett, assistant archivist for the presidential libraries.

Until Reagan, former presidents owned their White House papers, except for Richard Nixon, whose documents were made government property by special legislation after the Watergate scandal. Reagan, the first president since Eisenhower to serve eight years in the White House, left a record amount of paper, about 52,600 cubic feet. No matter how long it takes for the papers to become public, it won't be as long as for those of Abraham Lincoln. They were opened to public research in 1949. And the Adams family still imposes some restrictions on the papers of John and John Quincy Adams. Out and About

It won't be the same for the troops in the Persian Gulf -- Bob Hope will have women with his traditional Christmas show, but they won't be dressed the way they usually are. In deference to Saudi sensibilities, the Defense Department says the women entertainers with the 87-year-old USO legend will wear loose-fitting, figure-hiding clothing. Women wearing as little as possible have been the mainstay of the Hope Christmas shows for troops since World War II, but this time the men will have to be satisfied with their memories. Hope is going to be accompanied on this tour by his wife, Dolores, actress Ann Jillian, country singer Aaron Tippin, former Cincinnati Reds baseball player Johnny Bench, singer Marie Osmond, the Pointer Sisters and actress Khrystyne Haje of the comedy series "Head of the Class" ...

For all those ladies who were long uncomfortable about taking a shower after seeing Janet Leigh murdered in that famous Alfred Hitchcock scene in "Psycho," take heart -- the star herself never got over it. She has revealed in a Movieline magazine interview that she hasn't had a shower in 30 years. Leigh takes baths and insists when traveling that hotel personnel leave her shower door ajar from check-in until check-out. She still fears a Norman Bates copycat ...

Now who would have guessed? It has been revealed that Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who has been advising us about good sex all these years, doesn't sleep with her husband, Fred. They sleep in separate beds. This came out when the couple booked a Caribbean cruise. Dr. Ruth, not concerned this revelation will hurt her sex advice business, says it's just that Fred snores too loudly. "I have said very often," she explained, "you can have terrific sex and have a good night's sleep" ...
