Swinging blues and jazz pianist Al Copley (onetime Roomful of Blues member) returns for his biannual Washington appearance with shows Friday and Saturday at One Step Down (202/955-7141). Since they ended their weekly gig at Bad Habits almost a year ago, some of you may be needing your Eddie From Ohio fix. Catch them Friday and Saturday at the Birchmere (703/549-7500). The IN Series at GWU's Mount Vernon campus hosts a strong weekend of mostly local cabaret (to be repeated next weekend) featuring Ana Castrello and Debra Tidwell Friday, Sally Martin and Judy Simmons Saturday and Joseph Perna and Milla Ilieva on Sunday (202/625-4655). Friday is Latin dance night at the Black Cat (202-667-7960), with Bio Ritmo and Solazo, and the next night, it's the club's big sixth anniversary bash.
There's an afternoon show Saturday at IOTA (703/522-8340), with fine songstress Danielle Howle and dark country band Those Bastard Souls. That evening on the same stage, Annapolis roots rockers the Remnants open for Karl Straub & the Graverobbers. Saturday night at the Omni Shoreham Hotel (703/750-9277), it's one of salsa's best voices, Tito Nieves and his band.
Saturday marks the return of Pop Scene, the musical evenings hosted by local rock band Anne Summers. Pop Scene has found a new home at the Garage (202/331-7123), and along with Anne Summers that night will be Minnesota's Hang-Ups and Asbury Park's Evelyn Forever. Steve Lacy, one of the greatest soprano saxophonists who ever lived, brings his jazz band to the D.C. Jewish Community Center on Saturday (800/494-8497). Saturday at the French Embassy, Gypsy jazz duo Les Freres Ferre performs (202/234-7911).
There's a great rock lineup Sunday at the 9:30 club (202/393-0930), with the Buzzcocks, along with Lunachicks, Down by Law and Candy Snatchers.
She's 14, she's from North Dakota and she's already a blues guitar hero. She's Shannon Curfman, and she arrives in town Wednesday to play a gig at Lewie's (301/652-1600). Talk about old school soul, Gladys Knight and the Temptations will deliver it Wednesday and Thursday at DAR Constitution Hall (202/432-7328).
