"Nobody likes us," are the first words on Lesbian Boy's new album, "Like White on Trash," and after a few songs a theory emerges to explain that. It's not the local quintet's semi-metallic roots-rock. It's not the serviceable melodies. It's not the way guitarist Mary Twombley's offhand backing vocals harmonize (or don't) with Mike Little's professional-lead-singer vocals. It's the stupid lyrics, stupid.

Of course, the Boys (and girl) made the words "stupider than Charlie Sheen"--as they put it in "Nyquil Party"--on purpose. Song titles like "Sammy Hagar," "Song for John Lennon to Sing" and "Let's Give the Family [as in Manson] Another Chance" make it clear that the band aspires to the brattiness that put another set of Boys on the map. But Lesbian Boy isn't fighting for its right to party; it's fighting for its right to make fun of everyone else at the party. That's amusing for awhile, but record a whole album of such songs and you run the risk that nobody will like you.

Appearing Tuesday at the Black Cat with the Borderhoppers.
