The Maryland Cooperative Extension offers a master gardener training course Jan. 31 to March 3. Classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood. The course and textbook fee is $150. Classes cover cultivating ornamentals, fruits, vegetables and herbs, pest management, turf diseases, soil and land management. Call 301-590-9638.
The State Arboretum of Virginia in Boyce will hold a general orientation for new volunteers on Saturdays, Jan. 22, 29 and Feb. 5. Specific training is offered in February and March for volunteers who want to work in the office, gift shop or on the grounds. Call 540-837-1758, ext. 21.

The Housing Opportunities Commission seeks volunteer teachers for computer training classes for small groups of unemployed adults preparing to enter the workplace.
