The Fourth of July means hot dogs, fireworks and usually someone overly decked out in red, white and blue. This year, show your patriotism in a more refined way. Choose one of the following: A red bag, a white summer hat or a blue necklace.
If you want to go with the full-color trio, tone it down with small pieces of jewelry, combined with a neutral colored outfit. Or go expensive -- ruby, white topaz and sapphire.
Jennifer Boyd, the Mona Milkface handbag designer, created a star as part of her "Mona Gets Lucky" collection. The duchess silk bag with its shimmering comet tail is nationalism gone modern-day. "It's not very often you get red, white or blue in a contemporary way," says Boyd.
You can also go the summer route. Meg Carter's shell necklaces -- inspired by her son's hermit crab -- pair a nautilus shell with blue Czechoslovakian glass beads. "The blue is such a beautiful balance with the strong shell," says Carter, who names her pieces after beaches she's visited, such as Dionis or Fenwick.
Krista Criswell's Jaunty bag line takes reds and blues (classic) and also incorporates apple, chocolate or pink colors -- which means it'll last long past Labor Day.
