GETTING THERE: Downtown Winchester, Va., is about 90 minutes from Washington. Take I-66 about 70 miles west to I-81 north. Winchester's main drags begin at Exit 313.

STAYING THERE: There's a glut of modern off-ramp motels at exits 313 and 315, including the Wingate Inn (150 Wingate Dr., 540-678-4283), with doubles from $115. B&Bs are many, from the small Brownstone Cottage (161 McCarty Lane, Winchester, 540-662-1962, www.brownstonecottage.com; $110-$150 weekends, $75 Sunday-Thursday) to the more refined compound at the Inn at Vaucluse Spring (140 Vaucluse Spring Lane, Stephens City, 800-869-0525, www.vauclusespring.com) about six miles southwest of town, with rates from $140 (two-night stay required on weekends). If that seems too frilly-fancy for your bluesy, inner Patsy Cline, kick back at the Echo Village Budget Motel (Route 11 in Stephens City, 540-869-1900), with great down-on-your-luck rates of $19.50-$32.50.

BEING THERE: Patsy fans can narrow their tour to a quick afternoon of highlights, starting with her girlhood home at 608 S. Kent St. (Not open to tourists, but the fan club hopes to turn it into a museum someday.) Swing by Gaunt's Drug Store (1 Valley Ave. ), where Patsy once worked, for a look at some memorabilia. The singer's grave site is southeast of town at the Shenandoah Memorial Park (Route 522 at Route 644). For more Patsy memories, souvenirs and directions to other sites, contact the Winchester-Frederick County Visitor Center (1360 S. Pleasant Valley Rd., 540-542-1326), open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

EATING THERE: You can find good biscuits with sausage gravy at Lynette's Triangle Diner (27 W. Gerrard St.) and excellent burger action and shakes at Snow White Grill (159 N. Loudoun St. in Old Town Square). Brewbaker's, across the street at No. 168, is hopping on a Friday night. Next door, Madison's restaurant (164 N. Loudoun St.) has steaks, seafood and an affordable wine list, but also try the somewhat pricier Village Square Restaurant (103 N. Loudoun St.; dinner entrees $18-$30).
