I left the door open as long as I could, sweeping up any stray morsels of money that came our way. Now I can announce the grand total of this year's Send a Kid to Camp campaign: $608,428.77.
It's a phenomenal amount of money when you think about it. It may be shy of our $750,000 goal, but it's still something we can be proud of. We had a surge right at the end from readers, then a very generous donor, who prefers to remain anonymous, made a $100,000 gift to the campaign.
But we are short, about $150,000 short of our goal and about $80,000 short of the minimum needed to keep Camp Moss Hollow open for the entire summer. Because Family and Child Services, the nonprofit that runs Camp Moss Hollow, can't afford to divert money from the many other programs that it runs, camp may need to be cut short this summer. It's a decision they're mulling right now.
I'd like to thank the many readers who donated this summer. We quite literally couldn't do it without you. Special thanks go out to:
McCormick & Schmick's. Every Wednesday during the campaign, these seafood restaurants and their sister establishment, M&S Grill, donated proceeds from certain menu items to camp. They raised a total of $7,490.70. That's a lot of crab cakes. The McCormick & Schmick's on K Street raised the most, a whopping $1,706.47. The Reston location was a close second, at $1,588. Thanks to all the servers who urged diners to order the featured items. And thanks to all the customers who weren't put off their feed by the idiotic photo of me that greeted them at the door.
Marina Towers. The residents of this Alexandria condominium complex have been donating to this camp since 1998. This year they raised $3,640.
Salon Daniel. The McLean hair salon held a cut-a-thon, raising $1,789 in a single day.
Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox. Employees at this District law firm donate money each year for the privilege of having dress-down day on Fridays. They raised $2,092.
Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jackson. Kenneth Sprouse won a Fitness Challenge at this D.C. law firm and urged fellow employees to donate money for each pound they shed. They raised $1,400.
Other groups that pooled their resources include: Friendship Seniors at Friendship United Methodist Church, Falls Church ($25); McLean Duplicate Bridge Group ($80); Club Les Femmes Baies, Silver Spring ($100); VHA CFO Coffee Fund, Department of Veteran Affairs ($50); Darryl Leonard, Billy Leonard, Brian Green and Andrew Carts of Boy Scout Troop 945, Damascus ($80); the Adventure Group of Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church, Derwood ($25).
Some other thank-yous: Philip Gerlach at Gerlach Graphic designed the ads you may have seen in the paper that urged readers to donate. James Engel of Riggs Bank was behind the mysterious "lockbox" to which readers sent their checks. Riggs Bank's America Lopez went beyond the call of duty to make sure that cash that was mistakenly sent to the lockbox was dealt with properly.
As she's done for many years Gerri Marmer corralled the donations and tracked them with the intensity of a NORAD radar operator. My assistant, Alex MacCallum, wrote many of this summer's nicest stories about Camp Moss Hollow.
Reunited and It Feels So Good
I'm one of those people who thinks life is pretty much like high school. In every situation, one can find an analog from those years spent in ninth to 12th grade. (You know, it might be more accurate to say that high school is like life.) You may test this thesis at these upcoming reunions:
