McLean Softball Team

In Little League Final

* Forget the Olympics for the moment. Instead, let's root-root-root for the home team.

McLean's all-star softball team is playing in the Little League Softball World Series tonight in Oregon. The girls, ages 11 and 12, face two-time defending champ Waco, Texas. ESPN will televise the game live at 8 p.m. (See story in Metro.)

Now, back to Athens:

Gymnastics: Paul Hamm's medal hopes seemed to crash with him when he tumbled off the vault and into 12th place. But a spectacular high-bar routine made him the first American ever to win gold in the men's all-around event.

Cycling: Tyler Hamilton, who cycles in the shadow of Lance Armstrong a lot, emerged to claim a time-trial gold medal, the first for the United States since 1984. Teammate Dede Barry won silver in the women's event. (Armstrong, king of the Tour de France, is not cycling in Athens.)

Tennis: Venus Williams and Andy Roddick? Over and out.

"Starfish," the six-foot-tall sea horse decorated by Calvert Middle School students, has resurfaced. The sculpture was stolen from Prince Frederick, Maryland, in June.
