T-shirts, robes, place mats, tablecloths and towels are all appropriate gifts of cotton for a second anniversary. (Silk is Year 12.) But for something a little more romantic, a little more playful, go for sheets.

"Giving cotton sheets to your honey on your second anniversary is a good way to update the gift of cotton and even sweeter since it's a gift for both of you," says Sara Bliss, author of "The Thoroughly Modern Married Girl: Staying Sensational After Saying 'I Do.' "

Look for ring-spun and/or combed cotton sheets for softness and durability, says Dana Poor, Cotton Incorporated's home trend forecaster. "To add a modern twist to the traditional white set, look for sheet sets with energizing colors and patterns, like the popular geometric designs."

Next year's gift: A lesson in making the bed.
