Holiday parties are about to eat every single one of your weekends -- so don't forget to restock the makeup bag. Basic cosmetics should work from buffet to sit-down to cocktails -- from jeans to gowns to velvet blazers.

A good foundation for any buying spree is, well, foundation. Find one that goes on weightlessly and adds brightness to your face. Pick lipsticks with a metallic sheen -- the better to leave a festive ring on your martini glass. For the eyes, think smoldering. "It's about easy, wearable glamour," says Melissa Garfola, a spokeswoman for Bobbi Brown.

"One of the big trends is shimmery makeup," says Amy Synnott, InStyle's beauty news director and contributor to the glossy's "Getting Gorgeous: The Step-by-Step Guide to Your Best Hair, Makeup and Skin" beauty bible. Synnott advocates a shimmer cream that can be applied to the lips, cheekbones, inner corners of the eyes or the bridge of your nose. "You might not want to do all four of those at once," she says. "You don't want to look like a disco ball."
