Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Summer is the best time for quick weekend jaunts because everything is small (bikini), lightweight (sundress) and rewearable (denim).
"Women always bring too much," says JP McCary, premier makeup artist and director of education and events for Shu Uemura USA. So limit yourself to a big tote -- don't forget the one with a plastic liner for shoes or wet bathing suits -- and just pack the essentials: a pair of jeans that work with flip-flops and heels, a tank or two to throw over a bathing suit or under a bolero, a pretty pair of sling-backs to dress up beach casual, and a bright cotton summer dress that works for french fries or daiquiris.
If it's a rental, bring along a room fragrance or pretty votive candles to make it more homey -- for a less stale look and smell.
And keep the makeup bag to a minimum, too. "You don't want to feel like you're wearing a lot of makeup," says McCary. Everything is very light and soft. Bring a small palette with a few colors that can be added and subtracted depending on your va-va-voom level. "You've gotta have eyes, cheeks and a little bit on the lips," says McCary. To "kick it up a notch" (Emeril) or make it "hot" (Paris Hilton), add texture, like a metallic eye shadow, and shimmer the cheeks and tint the lips. A little dab in the center of the lips "doesn't look too heavy," says McCary, "just sophisticated and dressy."
