A new reality show about nine out-of-control teenagers in boot camp nearly rivaled baseball's annual celebration featuring all-stars on the diamond in the ratings.
The 76th annual All-Star Game on Fox was seen by just 12.3 million people last Tuesday, making it the least watched telecast of the midseason classic since at least 1983.
Although the game did win the night among total viewers, it finished second in the week's Nielsen ratings race, behind Thursday's repeat of "CSI."
Last Wednesday's debut of ABC's "Brat Camp," in which nine juvenile delinquents are sent to an Oregon wilderness camp for some tough love from camp counselors, drew an impressive 10.4 million viewers, fewer than 2 million shy of the baseball game. "Brat Camp" became the second most-watched series debut of the summer, behind ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."
Another ABC reality series, "Hooking Up," which looks at New York women engaging in the 21st-century mating ritual of online dating, didn't pique the same interest as the brats. It drew just over 5 million viewers in its Thursday 9 p.m. time slot, where it faced stiff competition from "CSI" (12.9 million).
Here's a shocker: Not so many people are interested in finding out who will be the next lead singer for Australian rock band INXS, whose glory days were in the 1980s. Last Monday's debut of "Rock Star: INXS," in which contestants compete to replace the late lead singer Michael Hutchence, drew 5.5 million viewers, placing fourth behind Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" and repeats of NBC's "Las Vegas" and the first hour of the movie "Meet the Parents" on ABC.
Subsequent episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday also landed with a thud, averaging 5.4 million viewers. This Monday, "Rock Star" maintained its mediocrity, managing an audience of 5.5 million.
The week's 10 most watched programs, in order, were: CBS's "CSI"; Fox's All-Star Game; CBS's "Without a Trace"; ABC's "Brat Camp"; CBS's "NCIS"; NBC's "Law & Order: SVU"; Fox's All-Star pregame show; NBC's "Law & Order"; and CBS's "60 Minutes" and its Tuesday episode of "Big Brother 6."
