The District

THE MALL -- Near the Smithsonian Castle, 1000 Jefferson Dr. SW. 202-357-2700. Open daily 10 to 6. This Allan Herschell carousel from the 1940s has 56 horses, two zebras, two chariots and a dragon. $1.50.

WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL -- Wisconsin and Massachusetts avenues NW. 202-537-6200 or 202-537-2937. Owned by the All Hallows Guild, this carousel is brought out twice a year for Flower Mart (the first Friday and Saturday in May) and Open House (the last Saturday in September), 10 to 6. Built in 1890 by the U.S. Merry-Go-Round Co. of Cincinnati, the carousel includes horses, a camel, a deer and an elephant along with two sleigh seats. $2.


BALTIMORE INNER HARBOR -- Key Highway, next to Maryland Science Center, Baltimore. 410-964-0055. Open weekends throughout the year, weather permitting; open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day 11 to 11. This 1912 Herschell-Spillman carousel sports 28 figures, including roosters, pigs, dogs, horses, zebras and frogs. $1.25.

GLEN ECHO PARK -- MacArthur Boulevard and Goldsboro Road, Glen Echo. 301-634-2222 or 301-492-6229. May through August, carousel open Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 to 2; Saturdays and Sundays noon to 6. Additional hours July through August, Fridays 10 to 2. In September, carousel open Saturdays and Sundays noon to 6. Designed at the famous Dentzel factory of Philadelphia, this 1921 carousel features a lion, tiger, deer and giraffe in addition to four ostriches, four rabbits and horses. 75 cents.

THE MALL IN COLUMBIA -- 10300 Little Patuxent Pkwy., Columbia. 410-730-3300 or 410-730-2511. Open during mall hours: Monday-Saturday 10 to 9:30; Sundays 11 to 6. Indoor carousel from Italy features German-designed horses. $1.50.

WATKINS REGIONAL PARK -- 301 Watkins Park Dr., Upper Marlboro. 301-218-6757. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, open Tuesday through Sundays 10 to 7; September, open Saturdays and Sundays 10 to 7. Dentzel carousel features a kangaroo, a hippocampus and an ostrich in addition to rabbits, donkeys and horses. $1.25. Call ahead to check on availability; at press time the carousel was not running because of a mechanical problem.

WHEATON REGIONAL PARK -- 2000 Shorefield Rd., Wheaton. 301-946-6396 or 301-942-6703. From May 1 through Aug. 31, open daily 10 to 5:30; in September, open Saturdays and Sundays 10 to 5:30. This Herschell-Spillman carousel, circa 1915, features 33 horses, three zebras and two chariots. $1.50.


BURKE LAKE PARK -- 7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station. 703-323-6600. Carousel open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day 11 to 6. Twenty bright fiberglass horses dating from 1940s and '50s. $1.25.

DULLES TOWN CENTER -- 21100 Dulles Town Circle, Sterling. 703-430-9415. Open during mall hours, Monday-Saturday 10 to 9:30; Sunday 11 to 7. This indoor amusement ride is a reproduction of an early 20th-century German carousel. Rides are $1.50.

LAKE ACCOTINK PARK -- 7500 Accotink Park Rd., Springfield. 703-569-3464. Carousel open weekends October through May; then daily Memorial Day through Labor Day noon to sunset. Wood and aluminum horses dating from the 1930s prance around this Herschell carousel. $1.25.

LAKE FAIRFAX -- 1400 Lake Fairfax Dr., Reston. 703-471-5415. Open daily from May 25 through Labor Day 11 to 7. This 1950s Parker carousel has 20 horses and two coaches. $1.25.

LEE DISTRICT PARK -- 6601 Telegraph Rd., Alexandria. 703-922-9841. Open May 25 through Labor Day, weekends only, noon to 5. This carousel holds aluminum horses from the 1950s. $1.
