You can run but you cannot hide from the weather.

Is there any place relatively safe from tornadoes, killer floods and other meteorological nastiness such as Hurricane Katrina?

Forbes.com recently teamed with data collector Sperling's Best Places to compile two lists: the safest and least safe metropolitan areas to live based on weather.

Cities were judged on how prone they are to weather disasters, including tornadoes, wind and hail, and how extreme their weather is.

Honolulu -- surprise? -- topped the safe list. When it comes to extreme weather, Honolulu ranked the lowest, thus most desirable, of 331 metro areas studied.

"The stats probably looked at how long it's been since they've had a hurricane, and that would knock them out of the extreme category," said Sara Croke, owner of Weather or Not, a weather consulting business in Shawnee, Kan.

But that doesn't mean that Hawaiians should rest on their leis.

"Of course, current events tell us that the Pacific Rim is most active now, so the concept of a tsunami should be considered a future threat for any of those locations," Croke said.

Seven metro areas on the safest list are in the Northwest, which any meteorologist will tell you has much less violent weather -- tornadoes and super-cell thunderstorms, for instance -- than locales east of the Rocky Mountains.

And thank twisters, high winds and hail for landing Kansas City, Mo., on the Least Safe list.

"The more extreme the weather, the worse a location's ranking," Croke said.

Around here, folks say, "Wait an hour, and the weather will change completely," she said. "That's a hint of the dynamic changes such as hail, damaging winds, blizzards, tornadoes. . . .

"For now, though, I'd be happy to go research Honolulu's lack of extremes anytime [someone] wants to send me."
