Surgery for Cheney
Vice President Cheney heads for the hospital today. Again.
The 64-year-old Cheney will have an aneurysm in his right knee repaired at George Washington Hospital Center. A similar surgery will be performed on his left knee at a later date.
The veep's latest condition was discovered in July during a routine checkup. The surgery will be performed using a local anesthetic, a rep for his office said in a statement yesterday. Cheney will stay at the hospital for as long as 48 hours and expects to return to his normal schedule as soon as he is released.
Cheney has had four heart attacks -- in 1978, 1984, 1988 and 2000 -- but none while he has been vice president.
Sex and This City? C'mon
We never thought we'd hear this: Washington is "sexy," according to "Sex and the City" author Candace Bushnell. Hmm. It must be the seersucker suits.
Or not. "I think it's the power and politics," the Manhattan resident speculated yesterday. Bushnell is spending the weekend here as part of a national tour supporting her latest book, "Lipstick Jungle," released by Hyperion on Sept. 6.
Although Bushnell, 45, has made a name for herself celebrating the culture of Manhattan through books and a lifestyle column for the New York Observer, she declared that Washington is a "great city" in its own right. Yes!
"In New York, everything is more squished in," she said. "There's more open space here. It's a beautiful city."
Bushnell had a planned appearance at Olsson's bookstore in Arlington last night and said she has a busy weekend ahead. So with any free time, will she explore Washington's sexy restaurants? Stores? Monuments? Not exactly: "I'm looking forward to downtime so I can wash my hair."
Getting Carrie-d Away
Speaking of "Sex and the City," the show's star Sarah Jessica Parker said she doesn't consider herself a fashion icon. Yeah, right.
"It's not the way I perceive myself, I'm so low on my priority list," said the 40-year-old mother, who has a 2-year-old son, James, with hubby Matthew Broderick. "I love beautiful clothes and am privileged enough to have access to a lot of them. But they're returned the next day. They're not mine."
Parker was in Toronto on Thursday, where she mimicked such celebrities as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton to launch her own perfume, Lovely.
Parker stressed that she wanted her scent to be subtle. "We've all been hugged by people who are wearing something really confident," she said. "I didn't want people to be apologizing, 'Sorry. It's not me. I hugged Sue earlier.' "
* Pint-size actress Dakota Fanning was just one of many green-sash-wearing girls Thursday when she officially joined the San Fernando Valley council of the Girl Scouts. And then she was a movie star again. After the ceremony, the 11-year-old "War of the Worlds" star treated her fellow scouts to a special screening of her latest flick, "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story," which won't be released until Oct. 21. Whatever happened to "Kumbaya" around a campfire?
