Lloyd featuring Andre 3000 and Nas:
Smitty featuring Robin Thicke: "Died in Your Arms Tonight"
It's the attack of the killer prombies! Reanimating '80s prom staples from the slow-dance graveyard, Smitty raps over Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" while Lloyd re-croons Spandau Ballet's "True." In both cases, the guest stars outshine the prom-kings, with Robin Thicke cooing cool, and Andre 3000 rapping about shopping for tofu at Whole Foods.
Blonde Redhead: "23"
Is it a homage to Michael Jordan? That new Jim Carrey movie? One of the numbers from "Lost"? Regardless, the driving drums and ethereal guitar bluster of Blonde Redhead's latest tune make it the most epic-sounding song they've ever recorded.
Blaqstarr: "Gun Up in the Air"
Not to be confused with Black Star, Mos Def and Talib Kweli's rap duo of yesteryear, Blaqstarr is a young Baltimore club producer making dizzying future-funk and dystopic dance floor threats: "Put ya' hands up like a gun up in the air."
Bill Callahan: "Diamond Dancer"
Oft-forgotten factoid: As teenagers, Neil Young and Rick James had a band together. Had that folk-funk union held together -- (CSNYJ?) -- the results might sound like what Smog-singer Callahan is up to here.
